Welcome to the first Seahorse Student Spotlight, celebrating news about students in the ACS community!

Toby Yang Wins 26th Annual Midwest Class Championship

In early October Toby Yang (6th Group) won the 26th Annual Midwest Class Championships, becoming one of the 100 top 11-year-old chess players in the United States. Toby was signed up for the 1500-1899 rating section and won four games and drew one out of a total of five games played. It was an especially tense game in the third round when Toby was down by three pawns but won all of them back. In his final round, Toby played with his opponent for four hours before winning! Congratulations, Toby!

Liam Goyal Achieves Black Belt

In mid-October Liam Goyal (3rd Group) got his black belt in Tae Kwon Do. He has been involved in Tae Kwon Do for over four years and has progressed through the various levels. He had to undergo a grueling 40 minute “test” of mental and physical stamina, including memorizing 27 kicking combinations, 8 forms, and 27 “1-step” sparring combinations. He also had to break boards in multiple forms. Congratulations Liam on succeeding in this test of strength and discipline!

ACS Students Place in Elite Chess Tournament

We’re proud to share that several ACS students placed in the 2017 Elite Chess All Grade that took place in Naperville, IL, on November 4.

  • William Zhong (1st Group) took 3rd Place as an individual player for Grades K-1.
  • Both William and his classmate Jasim Siddiqui (1st Group) shared the 2nd Place trophy as a team for Grades K-1 as well.
  • Last but not least, Christian Turk (7th Group) took 2nd Place as an individual player for Grades 6-8.

What a wonderful accomplishment to celebrate!
