Welcome to the January/February 2018 Seahorse Student Spotlight, celebrating news about students in the ACS community!

Charlotte Porter Qualifies to Compete in Indianapolis Swim Meet
Charlotte Porter (5th Group) is a competitive swimmer with the Maverick Swim Club. This season, she accomplished her personal goal to qualify to compete at the Circle City Classic “Indy” Meet in Indianapolis. Although her goal was to obtain at least one qualifying time, she ultimately qualified in five separate events (50 Yard Butterfly, 50 Yard Backstroke, 50 Yard Freestyle, 100 Yard Backstroke, and 100 Yard Freestyle). Good luck at “Indy,” Charlotte!

Brooke and Isabella Powell Have Their First Ballet Performance
Brooke Powell (3rd Group) and Isabella Powell (K) had their off-Broadway debut in The School of Performing Arts and A&A Ballet reimagined world premiere of The Nutcracker on stage in Chicago. Brooke performed as one of the Poor Spirited Mice and Isabella was a Happy Cloud. Congratulations!

Abigail Shipman the Youngest Performer in Salt Creek Ballet’s The Nutcracker
This past November and December Abigail Shipman (2nd Group) performed in the Salt Creek Ballets production of The Nutcracker. She practiced for her role on weekends and evening for two months, including during the week of Thanksgiving. It was a large commitment of time and she loved it. She was in three performances at Hinsdale Central High School and two performances at Governors State University, where she had the opportunity to take pictures and sign autographs for fans. Abigail has been taking ballet lessons at Salt Creek Ballet since she was two years old and was the youngest performer in this year’s production.

Fourth Group Students Use Their Birthdays to Donate to Charity
ACS 4th Group students Cole Spiegel, Kinton Surface and Benji McKendall have celebrated their birthdays together in the past. In 2017, in lieu of presents, they donated their birthday party money proceeds to buy books for the ACS library--over $700 was raised and given to the library.

This year for birthday #10 they came together for Cole, and celebrated with a sports games at The Naperville Yard, but again gave up their birthday presents as a group and donated the money raised—over $850—to BCCNS.org. BCCNS.org is an organization that is fighting for research, support, medicine, and hopefully someday a cure for the disease that has affected Cole since birth. His classmates and friends came together and celebrated these three sweet buddies, but also raised $ for this very special cause.

The Spiegel family is thankful to all of these Avery Coonley School classmates and their families who are setting amazing examples for others by giving to those in need at such a young age. Pictured below (left-right): Cole, Kinton, and Benji

Further, he placed 2nd in the mixed/handicap division and earned $272 in scholarship. Great job, Henry!

Four ACS Students Named to the Warren Junior Scholar and Rising Stars Programs
Each year, the Illinois Chess Association (ICA) recognizes the top scholastic chess players in the state by inviting them to be a part of either the Warren Junior Scholar program or the Rising Stars Program. Four ACS students were named to the 2017-2018 class: Alex Zhao (4th Group) is in the Warren Junior Scholar program, and Sohan Bendre (6th Group), Christian Turk (7th Group), and Tuoyu Yan (6th Group) are part of the Rising Stars Program.
