JK Celebrates Dr. Seuss' Birthday
On Monday, March 1, JK students celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday. JK students wore their pajamas and listened to Mr. Barton (also in pajamas) read Dr. Seuss' Oh, The Places You'll Go in a tent.
"It's opener there in the wide open air.
Out there things can happen and frequently do to people as brainy and footsy as you."
Young ACS Musicians Peform
Kindergarten students - Joshua Orr, Nani Veluchamy, and Aaron Kim, along with Early Childhood student Austin Kim, performed concerts with their teachers from the Western Springs School of Talent Education (WSSTE) for the EC, JK, and Kindergarten classes. The mini concert offered the children a chance to see and hear different string instruments played separately and with accompaniment.
Chinese Acrobats
The Home and School Association sponsored an enrichment program direct from Beijing, China on Monday, March 22. Energetic Chinese actobats brought their culture to life as ACS students watched their exciting acrobatic acts. One acrobat was able to climb up and stand on her partner's head! There were balancing acts while spinning plates, a synchonized form of Chinese yo-yos, and entertaining juggling acts with hats and basketballs. One of the most breathtaking acts began when a girl balanced a large jug with her feet. As her feet began to "dance," she was able to spin the jug. She then moved on to spin a large table, catching one narrow leg of the table by one foot! HSA strongly suggests that your kids do not try these acts at home!!
Group Two Maple Tree Tapping
A long-standing ACS tradition continued when Group Two tapped the maple trees in Maple Grove Forest Preserve. Maple tree tapping is a tradition that has existed for over 70 years. During their course of study, Group Two students study the weather and tree structure, drill and insert stiles, and collect and measure the sap from the trees. The sap is boiled out to create syrup that is served over ice cream to ACS students.
Shortly after the tree tapping, the snow melted and the weather turned warmer, signaling spring had finally arrived.
Native American Fair
Group Four students held their annual Native American Fair on Friday, March 5.
Students worked with partners to represent Native American tribes of the Northeast, Southeast, Great Plain, Southwest, Pacific Northwest, and Arctic regions. The tribes included the Mohawk, Ojibwa, Iroquois, Wampanoag, Cherokee, Seminole, Creek, Blackfoot, Sioux, Ute, Zuni, Navajo, Pueblo, Makah, Inupiat, and Inuit.
The event included tribal displays and presentations, music, and a student-produced performance of Contest for the Sun.
Shakespeare Fest
ACS prepared for spring break with Shakespeare Festival on Friday, March 26. The all-day event included performances and scenes from the Bard's plays, an Elizbethan feast, and students' exhibits and projects.
It truly took an Elizabethan village to pull off this event -- thank you to all the students, teachers, and parents that had a hand in the Fest.
"If music be the food of love,
Play on." -- Twelfth Night, Act i, Sc. 1
Group Four Student Has Poetry Published
Group Four student Audrey Hare had her poem, Ode to the Trombone, published in the International Trombone Association Journal:
The rigid case
With its metal locks
Is opened
With great pride.
Feeling the fur of the blanket
That protects the trombone.
Putting the pieces together.
The golden brass
Is calling to me.
I put my lips on the silver mouthpiece.
And buzz as hard as I can.
I hear the rich sound,
And start a new song.
The sound echoes through the room,
And it warms my heart.
Group Four Student Wins Regional Math Bee
Group Four student Sanjana Ramrajvel won 1st place in the Regional North South Foundation (NSF) Math Bee with a score of 24 out of 25. Sanjana's first place finish qualifies her for the National NSF Bee in August.
Congratulations and good luck Sanjana!
Group Seven Student Performs with Lyric Opera of Chicago
Group Seven student Helen Hagermoser performed as a chorus member in the most recent performance of The Damnation of Faust with the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
The production was well-received, with the Classic Music critic of the Chicago Tribune reporting, "As if to answer those critics who have been lamenting the dearth of daring at Lyric Opera Chicago in recent seasons, the company is flaunting its regained theatrical mojo with a terrific new production of Hector Berlioz's The Damnation of Faust."
Congratulations Helen!

Middle School Math Celebrates Pi Day
Middle School math classes celebrated National Pi Day on March 15. Classes tested the experiment of Bufon's Needles:
Suppose we have a floor made of parallel strips of wood, each the same width, and we drop a needle onto the floor. What is the probability that the needle will lie across a line between two strips?
The ACS version of the experiment replaced the strips of wood with a taped grid and the needle with a frozen hot dog. The results of "successes" that lie across two strips is theoretically supposed to yield an accurate estimate of pi.
Ask a Middle Schooler what they found!
Mask Making in Group Seven
Group Seven students started their mask projects prior to spring break this year. Parent volunteers formed the plaster masks over students' faces to provide the masks' form. Students will decorate the masks in a manner of their choosing.
