Design Thursday

We are excited to announce a new and innovative schedule for the 2019-2020 school year that will expand learning opportunities for both our students and our faculty. 

This new schedule will transform Thursday afternoons into spaces for learning and collaboration. Every Thursday students and faculty will move from their traditional day at 1:30 p.m. in order to begin their afternoon of Design Thursday. 

The schedule is based upon two key elements:

  1. Grade-level specific courses that complement our existing curricular programs.
  2. Faculty development through consistent and regular collaboration.

Students will transition to their elective courses that will all take place on-site with educational partners.  For example, Group 2 students might work with Dupage Children’s Museum for more hands-on learning.  Group 8 students might create a customized Capstone to coalesce their passions and expertise gained during their time at ACS.

Simultaneously, faculty will be engaged with colleagues and experts to focus on inter-departmental and cross-curricular collaboration, meaningful professional development, and curriculum review, redesign, and implementation. For example, our teachers are in their cycle of reviewing and aligning our K-8 science curriculum with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) – part of the Strategic Plan’s goal to “create and innovative, comprehensive program”. Design Thursday could allow ALL science teachers to be present for research, review, and implementation of curriculum on a consistent basis without being absent from their classrooms.  Our counselors could use this time to train the faculty on the latest research-based social-emotional curriculum to meets our student’s needs – also part of our Strategic Plan Goal to create “happy, lifelong learners”.
