The Avery Coonley School is a coed PreK-Grade 8 independent school serving bright and academically gifted students.  The school is located in Downers Grove, a suburb 15 miles west of Chicago.


Middle School Math Teacher:

This teacher will be a member of a three-person Middle School (grades 5-8) math team in an established program designed to prepare all students for Honors-level placement in high school coursework, with top students generally being placed in Honors Algebra II/Trig as freshmen.  The candidate will be skilled in developing students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and will employ a variety of instructional strategies to ensure that all students are challenged to attain mastery of complex concepts.  The candidate must be able to integrate technology in a one-to-one classroom environment.  Experience teaching honors-level Algebra I and Geometry is required.  Experience with STEM curriculum is also preferred.

Responsibilities also include communicating student progress to parents (including parent conferences and completing end-of-trimester report cards), and being available to meet with students outside of class time for additional support.  In addition, this person will serve as an advisor to 10-12 students, sponsor a math club, and serve on the Math curriculum committee.

Job Qualifications:

A Master’s degree and a minimum of three years of middle or upper school teaching experience, preferably with gifted students, are required. Independent School experience is desirable.

Instructional Technology Integration Specialist  

The Avery Coonley School seeks to hire a dynamic and creative Instructional Technology Integration Specialist supports student and teacher achievement in the pre K-8 classroom by promoting integration of current technology tools into curriculum and instruction, providing professional development to support the use of technology tools to enhance and redefine student learning, and collaborating with teachers to implement the effective use of technology in instruction. The Integration Specialist organizes the professional development for faculty and staff and oversees the classroom projects that occur in the Makerspace. 

This is a full-time position. We are looking for a teacher who has a passion, energy and enthusiasm for working with academically gifted lower and middle school aged children.  The successful candidate will work effectively as a team member to plan and implement an educational program that meets the social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs of individuals through developmentally-appropriate practices. 

This candidate will have background and/or experience in education at the elementary level and be able to foster an innovated learning environment that is stimulating, safe, and nurturing for children.    

Job Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of two years of teaching experience, are preferred.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with school administrative and instructional personnel.
  • Knowledge of a broad range of instructional strategies, resources, and practices in elementary school curriculum areas.
  • Strong communication skills utilizing person-to-person, written, and technological modalities.
  • Ability to cultivate strong partnerships with parents.
  • Gifted education experience preferred.

Substitute Teacher

The Avery Coonley School is actively seeking Substitute Teachers for the current school year. Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree with previous teaching experience preferred. Experience in independent schools or gifted education is strongly preferred. Experience with the AESOP Substitute Hiring System is a plus!


Position Summary:

To provide meaningful instruction and supervision for assigned classes in the absence of regular classroom teacher.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reports to school office at the beginning of the school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials. Follows sign out procedures as prescribed.
  • Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by classroom teacher.
  • Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
  • Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lesson, units, or projects assigned.
  • Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.
  • Maintains a neat and orderly classroom.
  • Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.
  • Insures students are never left unattended in the classroom.
  • May perform duties usually required of the absent teacher such as lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc.
  • Knows emergency evacuation routes for classrooms assigned.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
