Lower School Teacher

Job Descriptions

The Avery Coonley School seeks to hire a dynamic and creative lower school teacher to assume duties beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.   This is a full-time position. We are looking for a teacher who has a passion, energy and enthusiasm for working with academically gifted lower school aged children.  The successful candidate will work effectively as a team member to plan and implement an educational program that meets the social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs of individuals and the whole class through developmentally-appropriate practices. 

This candidate will have background and/or experience in education at the elementary or early childhood level and be able to foster an innovated learning environment that is stimulating, safe, and nurturing for children.    

Job Qualifications:

·       A Master’s degree and a minimum of two years of lower school teaching experience, preferably with bright and/or gifted students, are preferred.

·       Ability to work collaboratively with school administrative and instructional personnel.

·       Knowledge of a broad range of instructional strategies, resources, and practices in elementary school curriculum areas.

·       Strong communication skills utilizing person-to-person, written, and technological modalities.

·       Ability to cultivate strong partnerships with parents.

·       Teaching certification required.

·       Gifted education experience preferred.

Middle School Math Teacher 

Job Description

This teacher will be a member of a three-person Middle School (grades 5-8) math team in an established program designed to prepare all students for Honors-level placement in high school coursework, with top students generally being placed in Honors Algebra II/Trig as freshmen.  The candidate will be skilled in developing students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills, and will employ a variety of instructional strategies to ensure that all students are challenged to attain mastery of complex concepts.  The candidate must be able to integrate technology in a one-to-one classroom environment.  Experience teaching honors-level algebra I and Geometry is required.  Experience with STEM curriculum is also preferred.

Responsibilities also include communicating student progress to parents (including parent conferences and completing end-of-trimester report cards), and being available to meet with students outside of class time for additional support.  In addition, this person will serve as an advisor to 10-12 students, sponsor a math club, and serve on the Math curriculum committee.

Job Qualifications:

A Master’s degree and a minimum of three years of middle or upper school teaching experience, preferably with gifted students, are required. Independent School experience is desirable.

Music/Orchestra Teacher 

Job Description

The Avery Coonley School seeks to hire a dynamic and creative music teacher to assume duties beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.   This position may be filled by one full-time or two part-time employees and includes the following responsibilities:

·      Teach early childhood through kindergarten music classes, 3rd-8th orchestra sectionals and full symphonic orchestral rehearsals. 

·      Prepare and deliver music instruction using a variety of age-appropriate techniques, instruments, and songs for a gifted population.  Select a diverse repertoire and rehearse pieces for multiple concerts throughout the year. 

·      Create a warm and safe environment in which young children are able to develop a love of music and enhance their skills. 

·      Use the National Standards of Music Education and ACS curriculum to guide lessons. 

Job Qualifications:

·      A minimum of two years of music teaching experience is required, ideally with instructing bright and/or gifted students.  A Master’s degree is preferred.

·      Must demonstrate an understanding of basic music concepts and be able to communicate those concepts in a developmentally appropriate and age-appropriate manner with preschoolers, elementary, and middle school students. 

·      Ability to communicate effectively with both children and adults both orally and in writing.

·      Must be proficient on piano and have a working knowledge of string, brass, woodwind, & percussion instruments. 

·      Must be comfortable singing a cappella (unaccompanied).

Middle School Social Studies Teacher Job Description

The Avery Coonley School seeks to hire a dynamic and creative social studies teacher to assume duties beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.   This full-time position includes teaching two sections each of seventh and eighth grade U.S. History, and serving as an advisor to 10-12 students. This teacher serves as coordinator for the annual 7th grade trip to Washington D.C. each spring.  Responsibilities also include communicating student progress to parents (including parent conferences and completing end-of-trimester report cards), and being available to meet with students outside of class time for additional support.  The candidate will be able to:

·      Employ a variety of instructional strategies for teaching analytic writing, critical reading of primary and secondary sources, and historical thinking;

·      Demonstrate a deep love and knowledge of history and a desire to foster a love of history, civics and current events in students;

·      Integrate technology in a one-on-one classroom environment;

·      Demonstrate a willingness to collaborate with colleagues and develop integrated curriculum.

Substitute Teacher

 

The Avery Coonley School is actively seeking Substitute Teachers for the current school year. Qualifications include a bachelor’s degree with previous teaching experience preferred. Experience in independent schools or gifted education is strongly preferred. Experience with the AESOP Substitute Hiring System is a plus!

 

Position Summary:

To provide meaningful instruction and supervision for assigned classes in the absence of regular classroom teacher.

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Reports to school office at the beginning of the school day to pick up required materials/schedule of classes and at the end of the school day to return materials. Follows sign out procedures as prescribed.

* Carries out a program of study prescribed in the lesson plans left by classroom teacher.

* Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and is appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.

* Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as indicated in the lesson plans for the lesson, units, or projects assigned.

* Employs instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting lesson objectives.

* Maintains a neat and orderly classroom.

* Takes attendance in accordance with school procedures.

* Insures students are never left unattended in the classroom.

* May perform duties usually required of the absent teacher such as lunchroom duty, hall monitoring, etc.

* Knows emergency evacuation routes for classrooms assigned.

* Performs other related duties as assigned.
