Denise Clivaz started teaching French at The Avery Coonley School in 1994 following three years of teaching ESL in Switzerland. She is the current French Department Chair, co-sponsor of the ACS intramural program, co-organizer of the Group Eight French immersion trip to Quebec each year, and organizer of the Group Seven exchange program with France.

Along with her colleague Mme Roberts, Mme Clivaz has written and published a curriculum for the instruction of foreign language in elementary schools. Their “Real Language, Right Away” curriculum has become a popular tool for foreign language teachers seeking a more conversational, communicative approach. Mme Clivaz and Mlle Roberts have presented at numerous conferences including the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Language, the Central States Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Language, and the Southern Conference on Language Teaching.

Mme Clivaz travels to Switzerland with her family every summer and enjoys hiking and skiing.
